Mobile Money and Trust: How Fintech and Payment Apps Win Users in Ghana

Few people hand over their money or ID lightly. Fintech and payment apps in Ghana face a bigger trust hurdle than almost any other kind of app. Winning users means treating trust as part of your marketing from the first ad.

Why trust is harder here

People have seen fake loan apps, investment scams and impersonation of mobile money services. Even real apps are met with caution. Users worry about losing money, having their data misused and not being able to reach anyone when something goes wrong.

Step 1: Be clear about who you are

  • Show your registered company name and, where it applies, your licence or regulatory status. Only state what is true.
  • Put real people, an address and working contact details on your website and store page.
  • Give a support route that is staffed, including WhatsApp.

Step 2: Explain safety in simple words

Skip jargon. Tell people in a sentence or two how their money and data are protected, what you will never ask for, and what to do if something looks wrong. Warn users about fake versions of your app and fake agents.

Step 3: Keep onboarding simple

  • Let people see what the app does before asking for much.
  • Ask for information in steps, and explain why each item is needed.
  • Support the ways people already pay, such as mobile money wallets.
  • Make verification clear and fast, and show progress.
  • Tell users how long approval takes.

Each unnecessary field or confusing step increases drop-off.

Step 4: Use proof that can be checked

Real user reviews, store ratings, partner logos you are allowed to use and clear terms all help. Avoid vague claims such as "trusted by thousands" unless you can back them up.

Step 5: Write ads carefully

  • Do not promise guaranteed returns, easy money or risk-free outcomes. These are red flags to users and to ad platforms, and may break rules.
  • Be clear about fees, limits and eligibility.
  • Follow the policies of Meta and Google for financial services, and the guidance of local regulators. Rules can change, so check the current requirements before you launch.
  • Show the real app screens.

Step 6: Test messages that build confidence

Try ads and landing pages that highlight different reassurances: security, speed, support, ease, or fees. Measure which brings not just installs but completed sign-ups and first transactions.

Step 7: Measure what matters

  • Install-to-sign-up rate.
  • Sign-up-to-verified rate.
  • Cost per verified user.
  • First transaction rate.
  • Retention and repeat use.

A cheap install is meaningless if few people finish verification.

Step 8: Keep the promise after sign-up

Fast support, clear receipts and reliable transactions create the word of mouth that lowers your cost of growth.

The takeaway

For fintech and payment apps, trust is not a side issue. Show who you are, keep sign-up simple, speak honestly in your ads and deliver a reliable service. Do that, and your cost per user falls over time.
