How to Run Facebook Ads in Ghana: A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners

You can set up your first Facebook and Instagram ad campaign in an afternoon. Doing it well takes a little more care. This guide walks through the steps in order, so you avoid the mistakes that cost beginners money.

Before you spend anything

Get three things ready first:

  • A Facebook Page for your business, with a clear name, logo and contact details.
  • A clear offer. What are you selling, to whom, and what should they do next: message you, fill a form, or buy?
  • A place to send people. This can be a website, a WhatsApp chat or an app store page. It must work well on a phone.

Step 1: Set up Meta Business Manager

Go to business.facebook.com and create a business account. Add your Page and an ad account. Use your real business details. Accounts with fake or mismatched information are more likely to be restricted.

Step 2: Add a payment method

Add a card that can pay for international online services. Check with your bank that online and dollar payments are allowed, because declined payments pause ads. Keep enough balance for your daily spend.

Step 3: Install tracking

Install the Meta Pixel on your website, or set up the Conversions API with a developer's help. This lets Meta see who visits, enquires or buys, and it is how the system learns to find more people like them. If you send people to WhatsApp, set up click-to-WhatsApp as your goal instead.

Step 4: Choose your objective

Meta asks what you want. Pick the one closest to the real result:

  • Sales if you have a website with checkout.
  • Leads if you collect enquiries or sign-ups.
  • Engagement with messages if the sale happens in WhatsApp or Messenger.
  • App promotion if you want installs.

Avoid "traffic" and "post engagement" unless that really is your aim. Clicks and likes do not pay bills.

Step 5: Pick your audience

Start simple:

  • Choose your location, such as Greater Accra or all of Ghana.
  • Set a sensible age range for your customer.
  • Try broad targeting first and let the system find buyers, or add a few clear interests.
  • Later, build custom audiences from your website visitors and customer lists.

Step 6: Create the ad

A good ad has four parts:

  1. A strong image or short video that shows the product or result, clear on a small phone screen.
  1. A short first line that names the problem or offer.
  1. A clear next step, such as "Message us on WhatsApp to order."
  1. Proof, like a customer photo, a review or a price.

Prepare two or three versions to test against each other.

Step 7: Set a budget and launch

Pick a daily budget you can keep up for at least a week. Review ads to be sure they follow Meta's rules, then publish. Approval usually takes a few hours.

Step 8: Check results, and do not panic early

Look at your cost per message, lead or sale, not only clicks. Wait several days before changing anything. Then:

  • Turn off ads with the weakest results.
  • Put more budget behind the best ones.
  • Try new images and messages every week.

Common beginner mistakes

  • Using the "Boost post" button for everything.
  • Targeting very small audiences.
  • Sending people to a page that is hard to use on a phone.
  • Replying to messages hours later.
  • Running one ad and expecting a miracle.

The takeaway

A good first campaign has a clear offer, working tracking, a simple audience and a few ads to test. From there you improve step by step.
