SEO Keyword Research for Ghana: How to Find What Your Customers Search
Keyword research is simply finding out what your customers type into Google. Get it right and every page you write has a purpose. Get it wrong and you write about things nobody searches for.
What a keyword is
A keyword is a word or phrase a person types into a search box, such as "sofa makers in Accra" or "how to register a business in Ghana." You will hear both short and long phrases. Longer, more specific phrases are usually easier to rank for and closer to a purchase.
Step 1: Start with your customers, not a tool
Write down:
- What you sell, using the words customers use.
- Problems your customers want solved.
- Questions they ask before buying.
- Places they search for, such as your town or neighbourhood.
Ask your sales team and look at WhatsApp messages. The real words customers use are often better than any tool suggests.
Step 2: Use Google itself
- Autocomplete. Type the start of a phrase and note what Google suggests.
- People also ask. The questions box in results shows related searches.
- Related searches. Check the bottom of the results page.
These are free and based on what people actually search.
Step 3: Use keyword tools
Tools give estimates of how often a phrase is searched and how hard it is to rank for. Good options include Google Keyword Planner, which is free with a Google Ads account, and paid tools such as Ubersuggest. Treat their numbers as rough guides. Search volumes for Ghana-specific phrases can be small or missing, which does not mean nobody searches them.
Step 4: Understand the intent behind each phrase
Ask what the person wants:
- Learn: "how to start a poultry farm in Ghana." Best for blog posts.
- Compare: "best web hosting Ghana." Best for guides and comparison pages.
- Buy or hire: "web designer in Accra price." Best for service and product pages.
- Find a place: "dentist near Osu." Best for local pages and Google Business Profile.
Match each phrase to the right kind of page.
Step 5: Check the competition
Search your phrase and look at who ranks. If the first page is full of large national or international sites, it will be hard. If the results are weak or off-topic, there is an opportunity. Look at what the top pages cover and how you can be more useful or more local.
Step 6: Think about local language
Customers may mix English with local words, abbreviations or spelling variations. Include phrases people actually use, and test them in autocomplete. Do not stuff pages with odd spellings, but cover the main variations naturally.
Step 7: Build a simple keyword sheet
Make a spreadsheet with these columns:
- Keyword
- Type of intent
- Estimated monthly searches
- How hard it looks
- Page you will target
- Status
Give each page one main phrase and a few related ones. Do not aim several pages at the same phrase, as they compete with each other.
The takeaway
Start with your customers' own words, check them against Google and a tool, match phrases to the right pages, and keep the list in a simple sheet you update.
