10 Technical SEO Mistakes Holding Back Ghanaian Websites
You can write great content and still stay invisible if your website has technical problems. These ten issues are common, and most are fixable without a full rebuild.
1. The site is slow on mobile
Most visitors in Ghana use phones, often on uneven networks. Large images and heavy scripts make pages crawl. Fix: compress images, remove unused plugins, and test with Google's PageSpeed Insights.
2. The site is not mobile-friendly
Tiny text, buttons too close together and content that spills off the screen drive visitors away. Fix: use a responsive design and test on a real mid-range Android phone.
3. Missing or duplicated page titles
Every page needs its own title that says what it is about. Many sites have "Home" on every page or leave titles blank. Fix: write a clear, unique title for each page, with the main phrase near the start.
4. Missing meta descriptions
The short text under your title in Google results affects whether people click. Fix: write a unique description of about 150 characters for each important page.
5. No clear page structure
Pages with no headings, or many headings in the wrong order, are hard for Google and for people to read. Fix: use one main heading, then sub-headings for each section.
6. Broken links and missing pages
Links that lead to error pages waste visitors' time and signal a neglected site. Fix: scan your site for broken links, fix or remove them, and redirect old pages to the right new ones.
7. No sitemap, or a wrong one
A sitemap is a list of your pages that helps Google find them. Fix: create one, submit it in Google Search Console, and make sure it lists only real, live pages.
8. Pages blocked from Google by mistake
Sometimes a setting tells Google to ignore the whole site, often left over from when it was being built. Fix: check your robots file and page settings, and use Search Console to confirm pages are indexed.
9. No HTTPS
Browsers warn visitors about sites without a secure connection. Fix: install an SSL certificate and make sure all versions of your address redirect to one secure version.
10. Duplicate or thin content
Copying text between pages, or having pages with only a sentence or two, gives Google little reason to rank you. Fix: make each page useful and different, and combine or improve weak ones.
A quick self-check
- Open your site on a phone. Is it fast and easy to use?
- Search Google for "site:yourwebsite.com". Do your main pages appear?
- Check one page's title and description. Are they clear and unique?
- Click through your main menu. Does everything work?
- Look at the address bar. Is there a padlock?
The takeaway
Technical problems quietly hold sites back. Fixing the basics gives your content a fair chance to rank.
