How to Get Users to Come Back: App Re-engagement and Retargeting
Getting an install is hard. Keeping the user is harder. Many people open an app a few times and then stop. Re-engagement is the work of bringing them back, and it is often cheaper than finding new users.
Why users leave
- They did not understand the value quickly.
- Sign-up or setup was too hard.
- The app was slow or crashed on their phone.
- They forgot about it.
- Another app did the job better.
Talk to users and look at your data to see which applies to you. Fix the app first, then re-engage.
Step 1: Segment your users
Do not treat everyone the same. Group users by what they did:
- Installed but never opened.
- Opened but did not sign up.
- Signed up but did not take the key action.
- Used it a few times, then went quiet.
- Previously paying, now lapsed.
Each group needs a different message.
Step 2: Choose your channels
- Re-engagement ads. Show ads to lapsed users on Meta and Google. Ads can open the app directly to the relevant screen.
- Push notifications. Useful reminders and updates, if the user allowed them.
- WhatsApp. A helpful message to users who opted in can bring back people who ignore email and push.
- Email. Good for longer explanations, guides and offers.
Use more than one channel, and do not repeat the same message everywhere.
Step 3: Write messages that give a reason to return
- Remind people of the benefit, not just "we miss you."
- Show something new: a feature, a fix, a limited offer.
- Make the first step easy, with a link that goes straight to the right screen.
- Match the message to the segment. "Finish setting up your account" suits people who stopped halfway.
Step 4: Time it well
- Reach users soon after they stop, when they still remember the app.
- Space out messages. Too many reminders lead to uninstalls and blocks.
- Stop messaging people who do not respond after a few attempts.
Step 5: Fix the experience they return to
Bringing people back to a confusing or broken app wastes the effort. Check that the return path is smooth, sign-in is easy and the key action is quick.
Step 6: Respect consent and privacy
Only contact users who agreed, give clear ways to opt out and handle personal data carefully. Trust matters most for apps that handle money or personal details.
Step 7: Measure the effect
Compare a group that received your re-engagement with a similar group that did not. Track:
- Percentage who return within 7 days.
- Percentage who complete the key action.
- Retention at day 7 and day 30.
- Revenue from returning users.
- Cost per returning user.
If you cannot run a control group, at least compare before and after carefully.
The takeaway
Segment your users, send helpful messages through the right channels, fix the experience and measure the results. Winning back existing users often beats buying new ones.
